Our History and Heritage

A Family Tradition Since 1964

McDermott’s has been part of Spencer Street, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, for over a century – from humble beginnings in a toy and grocery shop in the early 1900s to becoming the name you trust in furniture since 1964. Today, our showrooms combine a modern flagship store with beautifully restored stone buildings right across the street.

Michael McDermott, who passed away in 1998, shaped much of our company’s identity. He was a hands-on businessman, equally known for his dedication to customers and his active role in the Castlebar community. His legacy – alongside Eileen’s – continues to guide the business today.

Beyond the store, Michael served as President of the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, helped organise the Castlebar International Song Contest, and played a key part in launching the town’s first shopping festival. His warmth and worth ethic remain central to how we do business today.

That legacy lives on through the next generations of our family. Michael and Eileen’s children, Micheál and Michelle, have been at the heart of the business in recent decades, continuing to uphold the values their parents instilled. Today, the third generation of the family has also joined the company, ensuring McDermott’s remains proudly family-run for generations to come.

No matter which department or building you visit, you’ll always be greeted with a warm welcome, knowledgeable staff, and thoughtfully arranged displays. We are dedicated to making your experience enjoyable and convenient. We provide free parking behind the stone building, complete with disabled spaces. Both of our stores are fully accessible with lifts to the first floors, and both stores have customer restrooms (with disabled facilities available in our main store). You’ll also find complimentary coffee areas in both locations for your comfort.

Diverse Furniture Collection

Our flagship store is home to an impressive selection of sofa and dining collections, featuring premium brands like Parker Knoll, Himolla, Alexander & James, Calia Italia, and Stressless. We also showcase dining ranges from top European brands like Bontempi, Venjakob, and Richmond Interiors. Our Carpet Department represents notable brands such as Ulster Carpets, Westex, Adams, and Cormar

XOOON Concept Store and SleepSpa

Across the street, our converted stone building hosts Ireland’s only standalone XOOON concept store, as well as our SleepSpa department, which displays top-tier mattresses from Irish makers like King Koil, Kaymed, and Odearest, along with luxury brands like Harrison, Somnus, and Mattsons. This location also features a wide range of bedroom furniture, a linen collection, and our ‘Room Outside’ garden furniture department. Additionally, we have an Outlet store with end-of-line sofas and other items. Free customer parking is also available behind this beautiful, historic building.

Exclusive FAMA Shop

Adjacent to our main stores is Ireland’s only stand-alone FAMA showroom, showcasing the most extensive range of FAMA products at unbeatable prices, thanks to our competitive pricing policy.

Knowledgeable Team and Reliable Service

What truly sets us apart is our team’s expertise. Our sales staff provide guidance without the pressure of overselling, and our experienced delivery crews and carpet fitters ensure a smooth experience from start to finish.

Comprehensive Delivery Services

We are proud to be able to offer a Nationwide Delivery Service, with our own-branded vans.

Our delivery service reaches Co. Galway twice weekly, and Co’s. Sligo, Roscommon & Clare at least once a week. We offer delivery within Connacht for a nominal fee of just €25.

We also cover the East Coast weekly, including Longford, Meath, Dublin, Westmeath, Kildare, and Wicklow. We run a southern route to Limerick and Tipperary every two weeks.

Areas such as Carlow, Kilkenny, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Fermanagh and Louth receive deliveries at least once a month, with a small fee of €49.

Deliveries to Cork, Kerry, Wexford, Waterford, Tyrone, Armagh, Antrim, Down & Derry are available as demand arises – typically every four to six weeks – chargable at €75 per delivery.
